ESN earns prestigious honor, named Blue Ribbon School

Barbers Hill Elementary School North has been named a National Blue Ribbon School, a prestigious honor that recognizes the school's commitment to educational excellence and student achievement. The designation, awarded to a select number of schools nationwide, highlights ESN's dedication to creating a positive and high-achieving learning environment.

Principal Jackie Brown, who has been at the helm of ESN since 2023 and is beginning her 29th year in education, expressed immense pride in the recognition.

"It is an incredible honor to be recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School," she said. "Barbers Hill ISD is known for its tradition of excellence, and we are proud that Elementary School North can be a part of that continued success. It is a true blessing to serve as principal of Elementary School North. I have the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary team of educators and support staff who inspire me daily.”

Brown emphasized that the district’s motto, 'Excellence by Any Measure,' is a core philosophy that guides every decision. She noted the school's focus on educating the "whole child," which includes not just academics, but also personal growth, strong relationships, and emotional well-being.

"Every decision we make is centered around what is best for students," Brown stated, crediting the school's dedicated teachers and staff for bringing this vision to life. The school serves a diverse student population, including both general and special education students, and staff work to nurture, challenge, and support each child's unique needs.

Brown also highlighted the vital partnership between the school and families, noting that collaboration is key to student success. "Ongoing communication, active family engagement, and shared support are key parts of our mission," she said, adding that the school is also grateful for the support of the wider community.

The school's culture is guided by the values of respect, responsibility, and relationships, which are reinforced daily. "Each morning on announcements, we remind our students: Eagles value respect, responsibility, and relationships. Together, we rise. We are NORTH!" Brown explained.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools program, which began in 1982 under President Ronald Reagan, celebrates and validates the hard work of students, educators, and communities. Although the federal program was ended by the Department of Education on August 29, the Texas Education Agency continues to run a version of the program for Texas schools.

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath praised the Blue Ribbon schools, calling them "a shining example of the great things happening in classrooms across Texas." He noted that these schools "foster strong learning environments, employ loving, dedicated educators... and facilitate programs and support that positively shape the leaders of tomorrow."

Schools in Texas are nominated for the honor by the education commissioner based on an analysis of student assessment and demographic data. They are recognized in one of two categories: Exemplary High-Performing Schools, which are among the state's highest-performing schools, or Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools, which excel at closing achievement gaps between different student groups.

The nomination process also requires schools to submit a detailed application describing their culture, curriculum, and community involvement. This recognition underscores ESN’s exemplary performance and its commitment to fostering a supportive and rigorous educational environment for every student.
